Ken:
It was an absolute pleasure meeting you last night. Your enthusiasm and dynamism shone through and I am so pleased you decided to turn around and ask me about my Service/Working dog. I had no idea you were one of the candidates for Mayor. I was so pleased we were able to have that chat about you becoming Mayor! . I must say that I was impressed with YOU, your ideas for Kelowna’s future, and your sincere commitment to the job that needs to be done even if over the long haul!!
Please do keep me posted on your progress and activities to become our next Mayor.
You definitely have my support and my vote!!
Sincerely, Florence
Karen (Kelowna)
Hi Ken,
You are very welcome!!
One of the first things that impressed me about you was in the first couple minutes of the live forum all the candidates were asked to talk for 30sec on their bio. You were the only one who looked right at the camera instead of reading from a script. To me, that made you stand above all the others….. and of course I agreed with you on a number of the issues that were discussed.
I grew up here in Kelowna and am a grad of Rutland Senior back in the 80’s. So I certainly have seen the changes to this city.
So yes I will be talking with my friends and business associates and we are definitely going to the polls.
You may use my comment.
All the best,
Karen

My goodness thank you for your kind words I am so appreciative it means so much to me! I have been meeting and greeting for weeks and its people like yourself who keep me going I have had great comments from the people I have met in person, it is extra special to me to know that you would take the time and make the effort to send me a message as such!
Now if I can only get everyone like you to take at least one person with you to the polls I know that I will be able to serve the citizens of Kelowna who have stood up and asked for change!
Ken.
Oh hey would it be ok if I took your comment and posted it on my Facebook keeping only your first name attached?
Hi Ken,

CATCH Questions and Answers
Q. In what ways will you help make your community more child friendly (for example: safe routes to school and access to services), and how will you report your progress?
A. In 2010 the school district and the city partnered in a research project to determine the need for safe routes to schools in the Glenmore area. As a result the city now has plans in place to improve these routes by August of 2012. Clearly these are the types of improved routes that are needed throughout our city. We also need to look not only at child friendly school routes, but we need to keep our children safe in our streets and parks across the board. This could include initiatives such as crossing guards at strategic locations, caretakers in high use parks, and increased presence of community policing in strategic areas.
Q. How will you help children in your community find housing that is safe, comfortable and does not cost more than 30% of the family budget, and how will you report your progress?
A. KELOWNA ALREADY HAS MANY STRATEGIES to meet this challenge. One of the fastest ways to add more affordable housing is to make it easier for home owners to add legal suites, I am personally working on a few strategies for this very problem that I am looking forward to having the opportunity to implement!
Q. What will you do to increase access to community owned resources and facilities to improve early childhood development (for example: co-location of services in public buildings and remove barriers to wider use of public buildings), and how will you report your progress?
A. Encouraging healthy, adequate early childhood development is very important, as is education on whole family well-being. Healthy children start with healthy parents. While most families recognize the need for early childhood development, they are so busy burning the candle at both ends, this very important issue becomes secondary. Community support services need to be available throughout our community as a way to bridge the gap for families at every stage.
Q. What will you do to encourage businesses to be more child friendly (for example: breastfeeding friendly policies and child safe public spaces), and how will you report your progress?
A. The UBCO nursing department has recently asked for input to this very question. I recently spoke with a past leader of the local La Leche League (the World Health Organization’s leading resource on breastfeeding). A child has the right to be fed when needed, anytime, anywhere, and a bathroom is no place for anyone to eat, especially a baby. Local businesses can be encouraged to provide a chair or bench where a mother can sit for a brief period as a common courtesy. Any business would benefit from being seen as one that accommodates its customers, no matter how young they are.
Q. As an elected mayor, councilor or trustee, how will you ensure that all council and board decisions are made from a child friendly perspective, and how will you keep residents aware of your advocacy for children?
A. As an elected official, I work for the citizens of Kelowna. I need to ensure I keep everyone’s perspective in mind, and advocate for their needs as they arise.
